Communicators Trust Public Television Media Services the Most

7 October 2024
At Kliping (and Babl), whenever we get a chance to share our insights, we like to take the opportunity to ask some questions as well. Recently, within the framework of SKOJ and in collaboration with students from the Faculty of Social Sciences (FDV), we set out to learn more about their media habits — especially whether these differ across generations. To collect responses, we used the Mentimeter app, and the results turned out to be very interesting.

Since it’s quite difficult to find reliable data on media trust in Slovenia, this article focuses primarily on that topic.

  • When asked “Which media do you trust the most?”, we received over 430 responses from 190 SKOJ participants (each could select more than one medium) and 90 responses from 41 FDV students. From this, we can infer that professional communicators feel somewhat more comfortable answering this question than students.
  • Among the media trusted most by professional communicators, the most frequently mentioned outlet was RTV Slovenija, with more than 110 mentions. It would be interesting to explore further why this is the case — especially given the ongoing developments and frequent leadership changes at RTV Slovenija.
  • FDV students, on the other hand, most frequently cited 24ur as the media outlet they trust the most, followed by RTV Slovenija in second place. Together, these two television stations accounted for more than half of all mentions among students. Younger generations (both FDV students and SKOJ participants from Generation Z) also showed more trust in social media, with TikTok and Instagram taking the lead.
  • Among print media, Delo received the highest number of mentions.
  • Among SKOJ respondents, the second most-mentioned outlet overall was Val 202, which also ranked highest among radio stations.
  • In third place by total mentions was STA, suggesting that professional communicators place significant trust in public information services.
  • Among online news portals, MMC was the most frequently mentioned.
  • Altogether, nearly half of all 430 responses went to various public radio and television services.
  • A few respondents also mentioned international media outlets they trust most — including BBC, The Guardian, The New Yorker, and CNN.

Of course, we also asked both students and SKOJ participants other questions, such as:

  • Which media do you prioritize for personal use, and which are most important for your organization’s communications?
  • How do you read news you encounter on social media?
  • What does “media relations” mean to you?

The answers help us better understand media consumption habits and communication trends within the profession. They also partly explain the high level of trust in television media.

We invite you to explore the full results.
